“True Power True Influence” Thank You Senator
It seems to me that true power and true influence should be the kind that you see in abundance everywhere, and benifit from, and I suppose many others as well feel this way although I am not so sure about that, that real power lies in the ability to bring about significant good wholsome change thus making a real difference, one that benifits an individual in one way or another.
As I see it, this narration of my most recent experience that unfolded right before my eyes after I disembarked and was in the Lobby at the Regan International Airport while on a short trip to Maryland in 1999 shows a perfect example of such influence and power. It was snowing heavily and very cold outside that late afternoon in December, so much so that hardly anyone was standing around in the open air except for those who were either being picked up or dropped off, and this I could see from where I stood in the lobby through the glass that framed part of the building near one of the front entrances
I had barely arrived when I approached a young lady sitting in her booth in the lobby near that front entrance, to her left beside her telephone was an electrical outlet, I knew it was worrking because one of its holes was occupied, my phone battery was dead so I thought of myself as lucky to find an electrical outlet handy to charge my cell phone dead battery, this happens to everyone from time to time especially when on a long flight across an ocean at the very least. So I approached the young lady attendant related to airport security, sitting at her desk and explained politely that I needed to charge my cell phoe battery which was by now more dead than I previously anticipated, and that it was crutial I communicated with my partners telephone number to notify that I had arrived at the airport and needed a ride. she directly refused to allow me to use the electrical outlet at her desk and did not offer any explaination, and could not tell me where to find another one in a hurry. I explained that it was very important I let someone know I am here since I did not have a proper address to my partners house since I was expected to inform when I arrived, again she refused to let me use the outlet. At this point I could not help but notice this tall middle aged gentleman dressed in a long black winter coat, hat, and holding a briefcase that was standing nearby apparently waiting for his ride to arrive which he could clearly see throught the glass from where he was standing apparently over heard what I was saying to the female attendant in the booth. I watched him leave the lobby. At this point I too exited the lobby to stand on the ramp outside the airport lobby exit area in the cold breeze, to ponder my next move and what was to become of me as night started to fall and the place grew darker. I was standing for a few seconds totally sad and worried as to my outcome from here on since no one knew where I was or how to reach me, when suddenly a shiny black limosene pulled up along side the curb where I was standing, the rear window was rolled down and a gloved right hand extended a cell phone to me; without hesitation I took it and did the obvious, I made that call for my ride, without a thought of who this person might be, except for the feeling that he must be the gentleman in the lobby a short while ago in that long black coat and must have heard my plight, understood it, and is now helping continue my journey to my partners place.
As I handed back the phone and said thank you to the gentleman, the limo sped away. My ride arrived soon after, but it took a couple years after, and not until recentlly in 2013 while at the Dallas Love Field Airport awaiting my flight to Palm Beach Florida, to see a few friends that I noticed telephone charging terminals EVERYWHERE, where I could charge my phone if I NEEDED TO, were installed all over the various lobbys and conveniently placced within hand reach at almost every bench. I could only smile as I looked at the many beautiful display of convenience and thought to myself “What Influence What Power.”
Thank you Senator Thank you.
